Will My Number Get Banned?
Last Updated: August 3, 2026
This API connects to WhatsApp the same way the WhatsApp mobile app does — it is not WhatsApp's official Business Platform. That means the account is subject to WhatsApp's own automated abuse detection, and restriction is a real possibility. We'd rather tell you that plainly than have you find out after it happens.
What Actually Causes Restrictions
- High volume, fast. Sending hundreds of messages in the first hours after pairing a new number is the single most common trigger.
- Messaging numbers that haven't saved you as a contact. Cold outbound to strangers is what WhatsApp's spam models are built to catch.
- Identical content sent in bulk. The same message text to many recipients in a short window reads as spam even if every recipient opted in somewhere else.
- Recipient block/report rate. A handful of "block" or "report spam" actions from real users does more damage than volume alone.
- Using the same number in the official app and via the API at the same time. WhatsApp only expects one client behind a session; running both invites detection.
Pacing Practices That Reduce Risk
None of this is guaranteed — WhatsApp doesn't publish its detection rules — but these are the practices that consistently correlate with fewer restrictions:
- Warm up new numbers. Start at a few dozen messages a day and increase gradually over 1-2 weeks rather than sending at full volume immediately.
- Space messages out. Add delays between sends instead of firing a batch as fast as the API allows.
- Only message people who've opted in and ideally have your number saved as a contact.
- Vary message content instead of blasting the exact same string to everyone.
- Watch delivery and read receipts. A sudden drop in delivery rate is often an early signal, before an outright ban.
We don't currently enforce automatic pacing or rate-limiting on your behalf beyond the plan's request-per-second cap — the practices above are things you control on your side today.
If a Number Gets Restricted
Restrictions range from a temporary limit (can't message new numbers for a period) to a full ban of the phone number on WhatsApp. Bans are enforced and reversed by WhatsApp/Meta, not by us — we have no ability to lift a WhatsApp-side restriction, and appeals go through Meta's own support channels, not ours.
Use a number you can afford to lose, and keep a second number ready if the account you're connecting is business-critical.
